Usually, when we sit down to start writing or creating anything, we’re often disabled by a force that stops us from starting, from typing that first word, writing that first page, or filming that first video.
Steven Pressfield
in his book “the war of art” says that most of us have two lives, the life we
live, and the unlived life within us, and between the two there is this thing
called the resistance and that is the secret to overcoming procrastination.
In this book, there are 3 key points that will help you change the way you visualize life and stop you from being a
chronic procrastinator:
1/ know thy enemy:
The first question that must come to our minds is: what is
resistance?
It is what we call the negative force that is actively working
against us, in order to stop us from doing the things we want to do. it stops us from doing
anything we know in our hearts that will level up our lives, it doesn't stop us from watching Netflix or video games.
It is that force holding us back from doing creative
things or things that require any level of risk-taking and hard work.
Put in mind that resistance is activated by fear, and
gains strength whenever we give in to that fear, creating a cycle that we fall into
wich lead to resistance becoming even stronger as our fear becomes even
greater.
However, fear is actually a very good thing, because
when we feel scared about doing something, it usually means we should just do
it.
“ The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more
sure we can be that we have to do it”.
2/ Become a professional:
Steven introduces the difference between the professional
and the amateur.
Amateurs:
He explains an amateur as a person who takes an action whenever inspiration strikes or when
they’re in the right mood.
They are not committed and their goals are focused on
fun, money, and status.
Professionals:
They shape their life so the work becomes a priority. They are
determined and committed to succeed by following their inner drive and creative
spirit.
A Professional is not someone who makes money from the
thing, because you can want to make money from a thing, but still treat it like
a complete amateur.
Instead, he is someone who does it for the
sake of doing the work and takes pride in the work itself.
If you are a professional, you’ll show up every day to
your job no matter what.
If you are a professional, you’ll work through
adversity and you are open to criticism because you always want to improve
yourself.
If you are a professional, you will understand that
fear is just part of the work.
If you are a professional with your work, you will
recognize that facing resistance is a daily battle.
3/ Banish the EGO:
We need to recognize the ongoing battle between the
self and the ego.
Our ego is more focused on external events and how
other people see us, It depends on external views, and seeks external satisfaction, whereas the self is the inner calm that we have which is about
the way that we see ourselves, the self seeks self-acceptance and self-satisfaction.
When we are led by our ego, our main priority is to
maintain the status of the eye in the world, and we are just focused on how
external events affect us.
Instead, our “self”, is made up of the
individual and collective unconscious areas of our minds, it includes our
dreams, intuition, visions, and aspirations.
It encompasses the deepest form of who we are, and
when we sit down to create, we are attempting to channel the self because
through it, we can beat resistance, it is our inner power that is hidden from anyone and anything, only we can see it clearly.
so,
If you start thinking “this work needs to be good”, as defined by
what other people think of it, it makes it really hard to start this work, and
you’ll feel the procrastination.
Instead, It is better to have most of your goals being input goals, entirely in your control. goals that we want to achieve because we want to, not them.
“I am going to do my best''. by the time, you will know that It will
become much easier.
we must discover ourselves and our dreams and goals in order to beat procrastination because desire is what will lead us.
